Ever Considered Changing Your Current Skincare Products?

Skin is the largest organ in the body and comprises of 12-15% of an adult's body weight. There are three layers that make up the skin: (1) The outer layer (epidermis), (2) The true skin (dermis), and (3) The fat cells (subcutaneous layer).

The epidermis is a relatively thin, but tough barrier that mainly consist of cells called keratinocytes. This outer layer of the skin prevents most bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances from entering the body. Underneath this layer lies the dermis, which consists of various connective tissue that determines the structural integrity, elasticity and resilience of our skin. This is the layer where wrinkles are developed. Below this layer is the subcutaneous layer, which consists mainly of fat cells that function as a shock absorber and heat insulator that protects underlying tissues from cold and trauma. Gradual loss of this layer over time leads to the appearance of facial sag, making wrinkles more noticeable.

Since the skin is the largest organ in our body, its important to look after it and keep it healthy. It is also better to choose good quality skincare products that benefits your skin such as those that do not contain harmful ingredients such as Parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulphates (SLS) and Fragrances, to name a few. According to Environmental Working Group (EWG), there is evidence that what we put on our skin gets absorbed and goes directly into our bloodstream. But how much it gets absorbed is not well understood. A study was conducted on adolescent girls aged 14-19 and found that harmful chemicals were detected in their urine and blood samples http://www.ewg.org/reports/teens

If you are looking to find a chemical-free skincare product, I would highly recommend Miessence certified organic skincare products. They have a very extensive range of skincare products that your skin would love. their organic certification guarantees you that they do not contain pesticides, and other harmful chemicals or pollutants. So you can be assured that you are putting only the highest quality ingredients on your skin. How do you pronounce Acai?

Have you heard of Acai berries? They are the fruit of a palm tree (Euterpe oleracea) that grows in flood plains of the Amazon basin. These tiny purple berries are highly nutritious, and have been a staple part of the Brazilian diet for centuries.
Amongst other nutritional highlights, they are exceptionally rich in a group of antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins, and also contain omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids, fibre, minerals and vitamins. These acai berries are considered an energising superfood!
Does anyone know how to pronounce Acai? Lets look at how others have pronounced it. The video was taken at the RioLife team sponsor Social Diaries annual christmas party.

Soap Nuts - The Eco-Friendly Detergent That Grows On Trees

Recently, I went to my local market and discovered something very unique. Something that I've never seen or heard of before. They are called Soap Nuts!

As unusual as it sounds, these berries grown from trees are used for our laundry washing. These nuts can replace our normal chemical detergents and can be reused over and over again. Therefore, are eco-friendly and saves us money.

Soap nuts are:

  • 100% natural and organic
  • 100% biodegradable
  • Anti-microbial
  • Leaves no odours

How it works is that you put 5 nuts in a mini cotton bag and then place it with your laundry. Once these nuts come in contact with water, then it releases a natural soap to wash our clothes. Watch the video below.

Its great to know that you don't need to use chemicals to wash your clothes. Nature always seems to provide a solution to our needs :)

Soap nuts and other natural cleaning products can be found here http://www.ecoheart.com.au

Ever Tried Eating Beetroot Leaves?

Beetroot can be cooked or eaten raw. Raw beetroot is a very good source of vitamin C and iron. Beetroot juice is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. There are some great recipes out there that shows you what you can do with this vegetable. But what about beetroot leaves and their stalks? Quite often they are thrown out because people don't know what to do with them.

Don't Throw Away The Beetroot Leaves!

Beetroot leaves don't need to be thrown out. They are just as edible as the beetroot itself. The deep green and purple colours tell me that they are very nutritious and beneficial to health. The leaves and stalks can be cooked like spinach or used as a salad.

Today, I made a salad using beetroot leaves and stalks and mixed in some balsamic vinegar. Tastes great! Try it for yourself.

Certified Organic Botanical Perfumes

There are many synthetic fragrances available in the market. Environmental scientists and health researchers are increasingly concerned about their affects on our health as well as their persistence in the environment. Synthetic fragrances have been linked to causing, triggering and exacerbating health conditions such as allergies and asthma. Other concerns relate to the bioaccumulation of synthetic fragrance chemicals in human tissue and the long-term impact of suspected hormone disrupters.

The best way to avoid these toxic synthetics is to use natural & organic perfumes. Miessence have six different botanical perfumes available. They are hand-blended in age-old traditions and smell absolutely beautiful. They are called love, wild, delicious, free, brave, and calm. My personal favorite is the "wild' one.

These botanical perfumes can be purchased from Miessence

Dying To Look Good

If you live in the US and is concerned about the ingredients in your personal care products, a good reference guide that will help you understand more about these ingredients is called 'Dying To Look Good'. Want more information, visit their website (Click here)

10 Tips On Healthy Eating

1) Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods:
Good health requires over 40 different nutrients in your body. So include a good variety of foods such as whole grain breads, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and protein foods (meats, fish, chicken).

2) Eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables:
It would be good to increase the number of servings for these types of food.

3) Maintain a healthy weight:
This is important because being too obese or too thin can lead to health problems. Eating well and exercising regularly can help with maintaining a healthy weight.

4) Eat in moderation:
If you want to eat the foods that you love, then keep the portion sizes reasonable.

5) Eat regular meals:
Don't skip meals as it would lead to overeating. It's also a good idea to allow for some snacking in between meals to curb hunger.

6) Reduce, don't eliminate:
There are plenty of people who eat for pleasure and also for good nutrition. But if you want to continue eating your favorite foods, you don't have to eliminate them. Just moderate the amount of these foods you eat and how often you eat them.

7) Balance your food choices:
Healthy eating can also be based on your food selection over several days. For example, if you eat foods that contain high levels of fat, salt or sugar, you can select other foods that are low in these ingredients for a bit of a balance. If you miss out on a food group one day, just make it up the following day.

8) Recognise your diet pitfalls:
You must know your eating habits first before you can make improvements to your diet. Write down everything that you have eaten for three days. This will help you make certain adjustments to your diet. For example, if you realise that you haven't been eating enough fruits and vegetables, then make those adjustments in your diet so that you are not missing out of vital nutrients.

9) Make gradual changes:
Healthy diet doesn't happen overnight. You need to gradually make those adjustments in your diet and eventually develop lifelong eating habits.

10) Have a balanced diet:
Select foods based on your total eating patterns, not whether foods are considered 'good' or 'bad'. We all have our favorite foods that we like to occasionally indulge in, such as, chocolate and.cakes. Just eat them in moderation and choose other foods that provide a balanced diet.

START MAKING CHANGES IN YOUR DIET TODAY AND KEEP YOURSELF HEALTHY!

Toxic Chemicals In Personal Care Products

How safe are the ingredients used in your current brand of personal care products?  Are you aware of the potential dangers of toxic chemicals found in personal care products?

Our skin absorbs more than 60% of what we apply on ourselves. So if products contain toxic chemicals, this will be absorbed into the body. They may be stored in certain places such as bones, fat and liver tissues. They may even stay there for many years and may contribute to certain health problems later on in life. The below animation shows us that dangerous chemicals can be found when we least expect it.

So keep yourself healthy. Consider natural and organic personal care products as an alternative to cheap and nasty chemical-laden products. Your body will love you for it. It is better to spend slightly more on natural and organic personal care products now to avoid potential expensive bills later on trying to fix any health issues that may have been attributed to regular exposure to toxic chemicals from personal care products. You can purchase some natural and organic products here (click me)

Based on personal experience of using these products, they have made a significant difference in my life. So if you haven't tried them, then I recommend you do so because I believe you will also notice a difference too.

Do we really need fluoride in our toothpaste?

There is so much controversy over whether we really need fluoride in our toothpaste to promote oral hygiene. We are all led to believe that the role of fluoride in toothpaste is to prevent dental caries (tooth decay) and help rebuild the tooth surface. But many people have not thought about whether fluoride has adverse effects and whether it is really needed in our toothpastes. Would we be better off without it?

So what is fluoride?
Fluoride is a fluorine ion, which is a gas that can be bonded with other substances to form compounds such as calcium fluoride. Fluoride is found everywhere. It is a naturally occurring substance found on the earth's crust. It is found in small amounts in our water supplies, plants and food. In our toothpaste, fluoride are in higher concentrations than what is found in nature and are in various forms such as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, olaflur (organic salt of fluoride), and sodium monofluorophosphate. Although fluoride is a naturally occurring substance, there is also some toxicity associated with this substance if ingested. For example, if you swallow 2-5 grams of sodium fluoride you can die from it. Similarly, if a child ingests a typical tube of toothpaste in the one go, it would be enough to cause death. Toothpaste is not made for consumption though, but if you are concerned about the toxic effects of fluoride toothpaste, it is best to use a fluoride-free natural toothpaste.

What role does fluoride play in toothpaste?
Fluoride acts as an enzyme inhibitor to prevent dental caries by killing those germs in your mouth. But there are non-toxic alternatives that does the same thing. Furthermore, healthy teeth and gums are associated with your diet and oral hygiene, not whether toothpaste has fluoride or not.

What's the difference between commercial vs natural toothpaste?

Commercial toothpaste comprises of 24-42% of water and has three major components: abrasives, fluoride, and detergents. A typical toothpaste constitutes at least 50% of abrasives to help remove plaque and prevent cavities or gum disease. The most common detergent used in toothpastes for effective cleansing of teeth is sodium lauryl sulfate. This ingredient is also another nasty ingredient found in many personal care products such as shampoos and shower gels.

Natural toothpaste are good alternatives to commercial ones because they are made with natural ingredients and may also include organic ingredients as well. They are better for your health and also the environment. There is a demand for natural and organic alternative toothpaste as consumers are becoming more aware of nasty ingredients found in commercial toothpaste. Salt and baking soda are some of the most common ingredients found in natural toothpaste. Essential oils may also be included in the toothpaste as well.

Is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) abrasive?
Baking soda is actually the least abrasive material for cleaning teeth. That is why it is always been considered such a healthy choice in oral care. By dissolving into fine particles, baking soda gets into areas deep between teeth and along the gum line that other toothpastes cannot reach. It also penetrates into the tiny crevices in tooth enamel to dissolve intrinsic stains. Baking soda in toothpaste not only has ample scientific support, it has a proven track record. Today, dental professionals are realising that baking soda remains a near-perfect ingredient for toothpaste because of its biological compatibility, ubiquitous nature and especially its low abrasivity.

Other benefits of baking soda?
Baking soda is effective in removing plaque and stains and gives you whiter, brighter teeth. It is also a natural buffer and maintains the mouths natural pH even after brushing. It protects against bad breath as well.

What kills the germs in my mouth?
Sea salt and essential oils have natural anti-bacterial properties that will effectively kill the bacteria in your mouth.

Some people make their own natural toothpastes, which is pretty easy to make with a bit of water, baking soda, sea salt, and essential oils. But if you don't like to make your own, you can purchase Miessence Toothpastes. They have three different flavours available: Mint, Lemon, and Anise. They also have other oral care products such as mouth wash and breath spray. Take a look now!

Keep your pet happy and healthy!

For all those animal lovers out there, we have a responsibility to keep our pets happy and healthy. Our pets rely on us to make them feel comfortable, give them food and water, and give them exercise or entertain them. Sometimes they drive us crazy, but they are a member of our family and we love them unconditionally. Dogs in particular are very loyal animals and they want our love and attention. Whereas, cats are more independent creatures. I have owned a number of different pets including mice, cats, chicken, and dogs. I can honestly say that owning pets bring plenty of happiness and health benefits in your life! At the moment, I have a dog, so I will share some ways to keep your dog happy and healthy!

10 Tips To Promote A Healthier Pet

1) Ensure a safe environment:
Make sure that your dog is not exposed to any potential hazards such as sharp objects and toxic chemicals (eg. insecticides, paints, solvents, antifreeze spillage). Use natural non-chemical alternatives for the lawn so that the dog does not ingest any toxic chemicals. There were occasions where I have found my dog eating grass. Not exactly sure why, but most vegetarians believe that dogs eat grass to either calm their upset stomach, make up for certain nutritional deficiencies (although grass is not nutritious), or just simply out of boredom. So ensure your pets environment is as safe as possible.

2) Provide plenty of water:
Prevent dehydration by giving your dog plenty of fresh water throughout the day. This is especially important on hot days.

3) Provide your dog with optimal nutrition:
It is important to realise that your dog's health is directly related to what you feed it. If your dog does not have a proper diet, he/she will display signs of poor health. These signs include dull coat, dry/itchy skin, flatulence, fatigue, unpleasant body odour, and other health issues. I think the best way to feed your dog is to mix canned and dry food together and supplement it with some raw  ingredients such as carrots, apples, green lettuces, and broccoli. You can include a bit of raw meat a couple times a week. It's best to choose organic meat that are free from hormones and other chemicals.

4) Raw eggs to improve the dog's coat:
For a thick lustrous coat, add the yolk of a raw egg to your dog's meal a few times a week. As for the egg white, it should not be given to the dog more than once a week as it can interfere with protein balance.

5) Garlic to improve health:
It is a good idea to frequently give your dog fresh garlic as part of their diet. A quarter of a clove of finely minced garlic per 4.5kg of body weight. Garlic can provide your dog with a variety of health benefits such as boosting the immune system, fight infections, enhance liver function, reduce blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, preventing blood clot formation in the vascular system, and keeps fleas at bay.

6) Yoghurt to improve digestion:
Yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria that maintain a healthy environment in your dog's digestive system. So add one tablespoon of plain natural yoghurt per 4.5kg of body weight as part of your dog's diet to improve digestion.

7) Maintain hygiene:
Bathing frequency depends on how dirty or how strong its natural odour is. It also depends on whether it is an inside or outside dog. If it is an inside dog, bathing once a week is recommended. For outside dogs, bathing once every few months is fine. Prior to bathing your dog, brush its coat thoroughly to remove any loose hair or untangle any knots. Frequent brushing is recommended in hotter months as the dog moults. Use lukewarm water to prevent chills or stress, then dry thoroughly.

8) Keep those flies away:
There are natural and healthy ways to prevent flies from hovering around your dog. A chemical-free product I know that is made for human use but also safe on pets is the Bushflower Body Spray. It contains a potent combination of pure organic essential oils and herbal extracts that insects do not like. A well-known ingredient used as a natural insect repellent is citronella oil. Citronella is derived from the stems and leaves of lemongrass plants. It has a sharp, tangy smell that insects find unpleasant. Other ingredients that insects find unpleasant include tea tree (malaleuca alternifolia), olive tea tree (leptospermum liversidgei) and lemon-scented tea tree (leptospermum petersonii) and neem (azadirachta indica) essential oils. Insects do not like plants that have lemon-scented leaves. The olive tea tree is reputed to have much higher concentrations of citronella than other lemon-scented plants. Neem oil is used by farmers as an insecticide and miticide to repel pests such as aphids and white flies. But people use insecticide with neem oil to repel mosquitoes and lice.

9) Oral Health
If your dog doesn't mind having its teeth cleaned, you can gently scrub their teeth with a clean cloth or a dog toothbrush and water at least once a week. You could also try mixing up a paste of baking soda and water and use a small amount as a toothpaste. Other ways of improving your dog's oral health include giving them hard biscuits daily, which reduces plaque buildup, and give them something to chew on such as artificial dog bones and toys.

10) Exercise
Dogs need exercise regularly to keep them active and healthy. Take you dog on walks daily. At least 15 minutes a day is better than not having one on that day. When you go for runs, take your dog with you so that both you and your dog will benefit from this exercise. Have a bit of fun with them so that they won't get bored.

Show your dog that you love and care about them. Give them plenty of praises and encourage good behaviour. Keep them happy and healthy!

Simple, Natural Ways To Look After Your Precious Hands

We use our hands every single day for all kinds of tasks such as cleaning, cooking, gardening, typing on the computer etc. We're so busy doing things with our hands that we forget they need looking after. There are several environmental factors that makes our hands rough, dry, chapped or sore. So we need to care for our hands by giving them a moisture boost on a daily basis by using a rich, natural moisturiser. I also suggest that you treat yourself to a weekly manicure to maintain your beautiful hands and nails.

A NATURAL MANICURE

Step 1: Clean and soften your hands with a herbal hand soak

Ingredients:
500ml (16fl oz) water
1 tablespoon dried calendula
1 tablespoon dried chamomile
1 tablespoon dried lavender
1 teaspoon almond oil

Method:

  • Bring water and herbs to a boil in a pot
  • Cover, remove from heat, and let steep for ten minutes.
  • Strain into a bowl and add almond oil
  • Soak you hands in the warm solution for ten minutes
  • Clean under you nails and push back the cuticles while your hands are damp

Step 2: Scrub your hands to remove dead surface skin cells

Use an effective exfoliant such as Miessence Garnet Exfoliant. It contains aloe vera and a range of fresh citrus blend of organic lemon, bergamot and orange essential oils.

To purchase garnet exfoliant (click here!)

Step 3: Apply a hand mask to smooth and soften hands

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon rolled oats
1 tablespoon plain whole-milk yogurt
1 teaspoon almond oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 drops frankincense essential oil

Method:
  • Grind the oats into a coarse powder in a clean coffee grinder
  • Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well
  • Apply mask to the backs of damp hands
  • Relax for 20 mins, then remove mask with warm water

Step 4: Apply a rich moisturiser to lock in the moisture and protect hands

Use an ultra-rich moisturiser such as Miessence nourishing hand cream. It is excellent for dry, chapped hands and contains antioxidants that help protect the hands from environmental stress. The organic shea butter and phospholipids keep the hands soft, supple and smooth. Helps to refine the texture of the hands and brings moisture to the skin. Absorbs quickly without leaving the skin greasy. Perfumed with divine organic rose essential oil.

NOW, DO YOU FEEL THE DIFFERENCE? YOUR HANDS SHOULD BE SOFT, SMOOTH AND BEAUTIFUL!

Ever thought of having regular massages?

I just love massages. There's nothing like a rush of oxytocin and endorphins to relieve physical pain, mental and emotional tension. It would be good to get a massage every single day! There are several benefits of having a massage on a regular basis.

What are the benefits of a massage?

  • Relaxes muscles
  • Eases tension and stress
  • Calms the mind
  • Improves circulation
  • Increases lymphatic drainage
  • Stimulates internal organs
  • Reduces swelling
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Promotes better sleep
  • Enhances overall well-being.

To enhance the experience of giving and receiving massages, use a certified organic botanical massage oil (click here). Its natural formula does not contain fragrances, preservatives and yucky petrochemicals. Its all healthy stuff!

Essential oils can be added to the massage oil for a deeply relaxing and invigorating experience. If you don't have a massage oil as a carrier oil for diluting your essential oils, alternative oils such as olive, almond, hazelnut or grapeseed oil, can be used.

Warning: Do not apply essential oils directly onto your skin without diluting with a carrier oil first as they are highly concentrated! The only exceptions are lavender and tea tree oil.

Use good quality essential oils such as Miessence certified organic oils (click here)
1ml essential oil = 40 drops from dripolator
So a 2% concentration of essential oil in carrier oil is recommended

I have included some massage blends that you can make up and try for yourself. These blends are for 30ml of carrier oil (6 teaspoons or 1 fl.oz) and approx. 20 - 25 drops of essential oils. If you’re making a mixture for repeated use, you should use the 60ml or 30ml bottle. Measure your carrier oil into the bottle then add the oil, drop by drop. Fasten securely, shake and label clearly. Store out of reach of children.

MASSAGE BLENDS

10 drops lavender
10 drops rosemary
